UNION — The 2015 Union County Fair gets under way today and will continue through Saturday offering those who attend it a mixture of the traditional and the unusual.

The first Union County Fair was held in 1908, and 107 years later this year’s fair, like the first one, will emphasize its agrarian roots with Livestocks Shows featuring a wide range of animals including chickens, rabbits, goats and cattle.

Also featured at this year’s fair will be such traditional mainstays as the Agricultural Show, Needlework & Crafts Show, Canned Goods Show, and Baked Goods Show in the Agricultural Hall at the Union County Fairgrounds. There will also be a Flower Show in the Flower Hall at the fairounds.

The shows give local farmers, gardeners, 4-H Club members, and others the chance to enter the livestock they have raised, the crops or flowers they have cultivated, needleworks and crafts they have produced, and baked goods they have baked, and possibly win awards.

In addition to such traditional, agrarian mainstays, the fair will offer a variety of entertainment with the goal of providing those in attendance with something a little different. Those different kinds of entertainment include:

• A rodeo on Friday and Saturday.

• Performances each day by “The Incredible Hypnotist Richard Barker.”

• “Wild About Dinosaurs,” an interactive event in which vistors to the fair will get to walk with dinosaurs.

• Live musical performances including a Wednesday night concert by local recording artist Monty Lane Allen.

A county fair is not a county fair without a carnival and the Union County Fair is definitely a fair as it will offer those attending children’s rides, family rides, and, for the more adventuresome, “spectacular rides.” The carnival will also offer those in attendance the opportunity to enjoy some traditional carnival fare such as popcorn, cotton candy, polish sausage, and fresh squeezed lemonade.

The fair will also feature a Petting Zoo each evening giving children and adults alike the opportunity to interact with a variety of farm and other animals.

On Friday, the fair will present the Union County Fair Pageant.

Tonight (Tuesday) is “Opening Night” at the fair and will be followed by “Senior Day & Church” Night on Wednesday, “Merchants & Manufacturing Day” on Thursday, “School Day At The Fair” on Friday, and “Final Day” on Saturday.

For more information about the Union County Fair including the times of event and more in-depth information about the various shows and entertainers, see the Union County Fair Tab in today’s edition of The Union Daily Times.
