UNION COUNTY — The Union County Yellow Jackets picked up a region win over Broome on Friday.

Union County shut out Broome 34-0 on Friday, improving their record to 2-5 overall and 1-1 in Region III-3A.

Friday night’s win was the first shut out the Yellow Jackets have had in Head Coach Steve Taneyhill’s four years with Union County.

The first score came from a seven-yard run by QB De’Airrius Smith in the first quarter, putting Union County up 7-0.

In the second quarter, Union County running back Ty Thomas ran for two touchdowns and Smith connected with a 27-yard touchdown pass to Shi Smith, giving the Jackets a 28-0 lead at halftime.

A fumble recovered by Deshawn Thompson as well as another Broome turnover led to two of Union County’s second-quarter scores.

Taneyhill said he is extremely proud of the team’s defense.

The Yellow Jackets held Broome throughout the remainder of the second half, and a one-yard touchdown run by Brandon Thompson in the fourth quarter put Union County ahead 34-0.

This Friday, the Yellow Jackets will host the Clinton Red Devils at Union County Stadium for more region competition.
