UNION — Both the 7th and 8th grade Sims Middle School football teams were victorious over McCracken this week.

7th Grade

The 7th grade Sims Tigers defeated McCracken in a final score of 20-18 during their “Pink Out” game for breast cancer awareness.

McCracken scored first on their opening drive, taking a 6-0 lead, but Sims responded with a seven-yard touchdown run by Tarik Briggs. McCracken took a 12-6 lead before halftime, but at the beginning of the third quarter, Sims’ “purple monster” offense created openings, allowing the tigers to drive the ball down the field.

CJ Coleman picked up yards on a run of his own before connecting with a deep pass to Briggs, who finished off the drive with a 12-yard touchdown run. Coleman scored on the two-point conversion, putting the Tigers of 14-12.

McCracken took over again with a lead, but the Tigers answered back in the 4th quarter. Willie Jeter connected with Briggs on a long pass, and Briggs scored on a 38-yard touchdown run. On Sims’ defense, CJ Curenton recovered a fumble; Tremaine Epps sacked the quarterback on a 4th down; Ja Ruth made memorable tackles; Keavis Savage stopped multiple passes; and Tarik Briggs intercepted a pass with 21 seconds left.

The 7th grade Tigers improved their record to 2-1 in division play and 2-3 overall.

“I cannot say enough about how these guys played,” said Coach Mitchell Moss. “They battled, fought and beat a very good McCracken team. We seemed a little sluggish at halftime. I told them to take a look at the pink socks because that represents those who fight everyday of their life against a deadly disease. The team responded. They came out and played their hearts out and we are very proud of them.”

8th Grade

The 8th grade Sims Tigers football team shut out McCracken 36-0 on the road Thursday.

The Tigers’ first touchdown came when TK Gossett intercepted a pass and ran it 53 yards to set up for KeSean Glover to run it in from 12 yards out.

Gossett then sacked the quarterback and forced him to fumble, allowing Jaylon Wallington to scoop the ball and score from 50 yards out. KeSean Glover scored the two-point conversion. The Tigers went into halftime with a 14-0 lead.

An onside-kick attempt was recovered, and the Tigers took the ball down field with the drive ending when Keion Glover ran in the touchdown from 32 yards out. Jabari Meadow caught the two-point conversion.

Coach Mitchell Moss said Austin Millwood stopped McCracken’s center all day and Keyonte Brannon played in the backfield al night. Chris Glass ran in a touchdown from 47 yards out, while Ralph Peake led the way, throwing defenders to the ground. KeSean Glover scored the two-point conversion.

The Tigers’ final score came from Jaquan Boyd, who ran in a 22-yard touchdown.

The 8th grade Tigers improved their record to 3-2 overall and 2-1 in division play.

“This was our first complete game all season,” Moss said. “We started out sluggish offensively, but the defense added the spark we needed. We have a big game next week against Gaffney at home. It would be nice to see Sims packed for these guys!”
