Nine students perform

Union Music Club holds meeting

UNION — The Union Music Club members enjoyed their first meeting of the year at the Union County Museum on September 8, 2015 at 7 p.m.

New President Thomas E. Bishop welcomed all in attendance and thanked the hostesses for the delicious refreshments. Then, he turned the program over to the program chairman, Miss Suzy Smith.

Miss Smith also welcomed everyone and introduced a delightful program of musical selections presented by nine talented Union students who receive musical instruction from Miss Suzy Smith, Mrs. Barbara Ramsey, Dr. Cathy Siarris, and Mrs. Lewis J. Turner. The musicians played the piano and/or sang vocal numbers.

The following students performed:

• Ross Dochterman, pianist, presented “Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee” composed by Ludwig van Beethoven.

• Macy Petty, vocalist, sang “Summertime” composed by George Gershwin and “O Mio Babbino Caro” by Giacomo Puccini.

• Madison Phipps, vocalist, sang “His Eye Is On The Sparrow” by Charles Gabriel.

• Katherine Martin, pianist, played “My Country ‘Tis Of Thee” arranged by Henry Carey and “The Battle Hymn of the Republic” arranged by William Steffe.

• D.J. Anthony, pianist and vocalist, played and sang “Imagine” written by John Lennon.

• Amelia Wright, pianist, played “Faith of Our Fathers” by Henri Hemy.

• Lillian Turner, pianist, played “Holy, Holy, Holy” by John Dykes.

• Andrew Benson, pianist, played “Le Petite Noir” by Claude Debussy.

• Anna Mitchell, pianist, played “Fountain in the Rain” by William Gillock.

The students received a small gift at the conclusion of their performance. President Thomas Bishop thanked all of the students for their wonderful performances and their teachers for their great musical introduction.

The club business meeting began with a few words from President Thomas Bishop. The club invocation and the collect were recited, and the Federation Hymn and the September song of the month entitled “The Star Spangled Banner” were sung. All songs used in the business meeting were accompanied on the piano by Miss Suzy Smith or Mr. Bishop. The history of the song of the month was read, including information about the poet, Francis Scott Key, whose poem became the lyrics for the song.

Treasurer Rev. Sanders Read presented the treasurer’s report. The July club fundraiser/yard sale was discussed. The money that was raised from this fundraiser will be used for music scholarships. Several young Union County musicians will receive organ lessons at no charge from club President Thomas Bishop, organist/choirmaster of Grace United Methodist Church.

Club dues were collected. A Thank You note was read from previous scholarship winners. The program committee was thanked, and the program book was examined. New members were recommended and will be contacted. Future fundraisers were discussed, and local musical performances were mentioned.

President Thomas Bishop thanked all those in attendance, and the meeting adjourned with the singing of the Benediction entitled “The Gift of Song” written by Lana M. Bailey.
