UNION — The paintings that currently line the lobby and adjacent halls of the Main Building at USC Union are part of the 2015 Art Exhibition sponsored by the Union County Arts Council.

Arts Council members spent part of Friday placing the paintings on the walls of the Main Building in preparation for the exhibition which will be held from 5:30-7:30 p.m. this Thursday.

“We will have 65 pieces of art from over 30 artists,” Union County Arts Council Coordinator Amber Ivey said Tuesday.

Ivey said that the 65 works of art on display are submissions to the UCAC’s annual Juried Art Show. She said the judge for this year’s Juried Art Show is Columbia artist Toni Elkins. Ivey said that Elkins has already judged the items submitted and selected this year’s winners. She said the winners will be announced during the Thursday’s exhibition.

The winners of the Juried Art Show will receive the following awards sponsored by area businesses, families, and individuals:

• Arthur State Bank Award

• Mrs. W.J. Whitener Award

• Founders FCU Award

• Timken Tyger River Plant Award

• Switzer Award

• Union Family Pharmacy Award

• Frank Hart Allstate Insurance Company Award

• United Wood Treating Company Award

Ivey said the awards honor a mixture of artistic styles and subjects including abstract, portraits, and landscapes.

Thursday’s exhibit is open to the public who Ivey said will also have the opportunity to help decide an award of their own.

“There will also be the People’s Choice Award,” Ivey said. “People attending the exhibition will get to vote on which artist they think should get the People’s Choice Award. The winner of the People’s Choice Award will also be announced at the exhibition.”

Ivey said a reception will immediately follow the announcement of the awards.

The paintings will continue to be on display in the Main Building of USC Union through Oct. 30.

Ivey said that in addition to serving as the judge of this year’s Juried Art Show, Elkins also has her work on display at the UCAC Art Gallery. She said the Elkins exhibit will remain on display at the Art Gallery through October.
