UNION — The Union County Yellow Jackets picked up their first win of the season in Friday’s Homecoming game against Abbeville.

The Yellow Jackets defeated Abbeville 29-15, making the Jackets’ record 1-4.

Abbeville struck first in the first quarter, taking a 7-0 lead, but Union County answered with a three-yard pass from QB De’Airrius Smith to Montray Feaster, making the score 7-6 with a failed two-point conversion.

The Yellow Jackets scored again in the second quarter, taking a 12-7 lead over Abbeville. Then, before the end of the half, kicker Jacob Crocker kicked his first career field goal (25 yards), giving the Yellow Jackets a 15-7 lead going into the half.

To begin the third quarter, Abbeville scored a touchdown with a two-point conversion, tying the game at 15.

In the fourth quarter, a touchdown pass from Union County’s Smith to Roscoe Johnson (with the PAT from Crocker) put the Jackets back in the lead with a score of 22-15. Later in the fourth quarter, an Abbeville punt put the Yellow Jackets on their own 2-yard line, but Smith connected with Johnson again for a 53-yard pass, quickly getting the Jackets out of their end zone. Wide receiver Shi Smith then ran in a 19-yard touchdown on fourth-and-one, putting the Yellow Jackets ahead 29-15.

Union County has not yet played a region game this year, as they will begin region play in two weeks when they host South Pointe. The Yellow Jackets have a bye week this Friday since they played a game on Week 0 of the high school schedule.
