UNION — A reception honoring the work of an assistant professor at USC Union’s Laurens camp and the grandfather that inspired her to study art was held at the Union County Arts Council Art Gallery Thursday evening.

Twenty-two paintings and five sculptures by Christine Sixta Rinehart are on display at the art gallery through Sept. 22. The paintings include both oil and watercolor and their subjects includes scenes from South Carolina, Aruba and Europe

Sixta Rinehart, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor of Political Science at the USC Union Laurens campus, a published author, world traveler, and speaker of four languages. Her involvement in the world of art began when she young and was inspired by the paintings of her grandfather, Dr. Henry Sixta, a Nebraska dentist who died in 1967. Even though she never met her grandfather, Sixta Rinehart credits him with her decision to seriously study art. When her grandmother died in 1999, Sixta Rinehart inherited one of the four paintings her grandfather painted and also his artist box which cotains his brushes and other art tools which his granddaughter has used in some of her work over the years.

The painting and the artist box and its contents which she inherited along with a picture of her grandparents and her artist statement are on display at the art gallery along with Sixta Rinehart’s work.
