UNION — A local church organization has turned its basement into a “store” in preparation for a two-day yard sale event to raise funds for mission work.

The ladies of the WMU (Woman’s Missions Union) at Fairview Baptist Church — located at 763 Neal Shoals Road, Union — have organized a church-wide yard sale to raise money for local missions in the community, as well as those that are statewide, nationwide and international.

“We also do things for people in our community — wherever we see a need,” said WMU member Frances Fowler.

Ross Wilson — the pastor of the church since December 2013 — said the focus of the entire church is mission work.

“Spreading God’s love here and abroad,” Wilson said. “I’m absolutely thrilled the WMU ladies have taken this upon themselves to help with missions.”

Wilson said the displaying and carrying out of these types of projects are vital to the church.

Wilson has participated in a mission trip to Nicaragua through the Union County Baptist Association in partnership with Chosen Children Ministries, and he said he looks forward to going back next July. He also said he is always looking for ways to help out in the community.

Fowler said members of the church — as well as members’ friends — have already donated items including appliances, clothes, a piano, curtains, bedding, Christmas decorations, movies and books, a new mattress, a printer, a microwave and much more.

“There are lots and lots of items still coming in,” Fowler said.

The sale will be held at 8 a.m. Friday and Saturday, Oct. 2-3, at the church.

Wilson said he will attempt to keep it in the forefront by announcing it each Sunday until then and hopefully continuing to receive donations.

Fairview Baptist Church — at 176 years old — will hold Homecoming on Sept. 20.
