UNION — Residents of and visitors to Union County will be able to enjoy two days of festival fun this Friday and Saturday in downtown Union during the 20th annual Uniquely Union Festival.

The festivities get under way at noon Friday and will continue Saturday at 10 a.m. The festival will offer those attending live music and other live entertainment, a Kidz Zone with activities for children, a car and bike show, and the chance to sample the barbecue cooked during the BBQ Cook Off.

While the festival will not begin until 10 a.m. Friday, Main Street between Enterprise Street and Church Street will be closed to traffic at 7 a.m. that morning and remain closed until the end of the festival Saturday night.

The festival is the subject of the Uniquely Union tab in today’s edition of The Union Daily Time which includes a map of the festival events and their locations in the downtown area.

Kidz Zone

This year’s Kidz Zone will be open Friday from 3 a.m.-7 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m.-7 p.m.

Friday’s Kidz Zone will feature DJ Big as well as inflatables, rock climbing, and a mechanical bull.

Saturday’s Kidz Zone will also feature inflatables, rock climbing, and a mechanical bull as well as a “Kidz Donut Eating Contest” at 11 a.m. and an “Adult Donut Eating Contest” at 2 p.m.

Uniquely Union Festival Committee Chairman Kim Lawson announced Wednesday that no admission will be charged for the Kidz Zone.

While originally plans were to charge $5 for a two-day bracelet for admission to the Kidz Zone, Lawson said the decision had been made to not charge admission and instead admit those wanting to take part in the Kidz Zone activities to the area for free.

BBQ Cook-Off

One of the most popular parts of any festival is the food, and Uniquely Union provides plenty of it through its BBQ Cook Off in which competing cookers battle it out to see who can cook up the best barbecue.

During the course of the festival on Saturday, persons with a taste for barbecue can indulge themselves by purchasing a “Tasters’ Choice” ticket for $5 at one of the Welcome Centers which will be set up in the downtown area. A Tasters’ Choice ticket enables the holder to get samples from each of the cookers participating in the BBQ Cook Off.

On Friday, the BBQ Cook Off will include a Cookers’ Meeting in the Judges’ Quarters in the SCWorks office at 4 p.m.; Anything Butt Savory Turn-In at 6:30 p.m.; and Anything Butt Sweet Turn-In at 7:30 p.m.

On Saturday, the BBQ Cook Off will include Pork Turn-In at 11 a.m.; Chicken Turn-In at 11:30 a.m.; Ribs Turn-In at 12 p.m.; Kidz Q and Sauce Turn-In at 12:30 p.m.; Tasters’ Choice at 1 p.m.; and Cook-Off Awards at 4 p.m.

Music

Live music is a big part of Uniquely Union and this year will be no different with performers taking the Main Stage throughout each day.

The headliners for the each day include, on Friday, Elvis impersonator Rick Alviti who will perform from 8:30-10 p.m. and, on Saturday, The Root Doctors who will perform from 8-10 p.m.

(For more on Rick Alviti and The Root Doctors as well as other aspects of the festival, see the Uniquely Union tab in today’s Union Daily Times.)

Also performing on Friday will be Highway 49 (1-1:45 p.m.), Ally & Friends (2-2:45 p.m.), Donovan Wells (4-4:45 p.m.), and Louie Jackson (7-7:45 p.m.).

Highway 49 (10-10:45 a.m.) and Donovan Wells (12-12:45 p.m.) will also perform on Saturday as will The Change (1-1:45 p.m.), Dazed Renegade (2-2:45 p.m.), and Mattie Phifer (5-5:45 p.m.).

Car & Bike Show

Saturday will also feature the Uniquely Union Car & Bike Show from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. with Car Awards handed out at 3:15 p.m. and Bike Awards at 4:30 p.m.

Boogaloo

There will also be live performances of a “new and unique folk art play” by Boogaloo Productions at 111 West Main St.

Museum

The Union Museum will be open both days offering free tours of its exhibits to all those who stop in.

Arts Council

The Union County Arts Council will also be open both days giving those attending the festival the opportunity to view its exhibits and cool off for a while.
