LOCKHART and CARLISLE — Union County will soon be enforcing its building codes within the municipal boundaries of the towns of Lockhart and Carlisle

Mayor Ailene Ashe said Friday that Lockhart Town Council voted Tuesday to approve first reading of an ordinance adopting the Union County Building, Construction and Technical Code. She said that once council gives final approval to the ordinance the county code will be in effect within the town.

Ashe said that state law requires all municipalities to have and enforce building, construction and technical codes. Lockhart, however, is not financially able to implement such a system on its own.

The ordinance, however, will place the town under the county system and allow the county’s building inspection department to enforce it.

Carlisle Town Council also voted Tuesday to become part of the county’s building code enforcement system.

Town Administrator Shannon McBride said Friday that council approved a resolution authorizing the town and the county to enter into a memorandum of agreement for code enforcement.

McBride said that under the agreement, Carlisle will partner with Union County which she said will oversee all permits and inspections pertaining to code enforcement in the town.

In addition to approving the resolution authorizing the memorandum of agreement, McBride said council also approved first reading of an ordinance rescinding the town’s building code and adopting the county’s building code in its place.

McBride said that, unlike the county, the town does not have its own building inspector, but instead contracts with a private business to provide those services. She said that the goal of the town in entering the county system is to provide building inspection services more effectively and efficiently through the county than under the current arrangement.
