GAFFNEY — The Union County Yellow Jackets fell short in Friday’s season opener, losing to rival Gaffney 35-28.

Union County took control early on in Friday’s game at the new “Reservation” in Gaffney. The Yellow Jackets were the first team to put points on the board, taking an early 7-0 lead when Union County QB De’Airrius Smith carried in a touchdown with a PAT kick from Jacob Crocker.

Gaffney then forced a Union County fumble, but on the next play, Union County linebacker Scott Brannon tipped a Gaffney pass, caught it, and ran in a 55-yard touchdown to give the Yellow Jackets a 14-0 lead.

Gaffney answered back with a touchdown on the following drive, making the score 14-7. Then, Smith connected with a 30-yard touchdown pass to Roscoe Johnson, giving Union County a 21-7 lead.

During Union County’s first drive of the second quarter, Johnson scored again with a 78-yard touchdown reception, making the score 28-7.

Gaffney then began a scoring rally with a touchdown pass that made the score 28-14. On the next play, Gaffney’s Lolo Dawkins returned an interception to score again, making it 28-21. Dawkins then picked off another ball in the following series, which led to a touchdown run and a tie score of 28-28.

After several turnovers by each team, Gaffney QB Bryson Ward ran in a seven-yard touchdown to give Gaffney their first lead of the game at 35-28.

The Yellow Jackets worked toward a comeback — driving to Gaffney’s 15-yard line — when Gaffney intercepted a pass from Smith in the end zone. Another pass from Smith was intercepted in the final play of the game.

Union County will look to improve its record to 1-1 this Friday as they host the Newberry Bulldogs at 7:30 p.m. at Union County Stadium.
