School year off to good start

UNION COUNTY — The first of five first days of school in the Union County School District was a success according to the principals and other staff members at several of the county’s public schools.

Monday was the first day of the 2015-2016 school year for students in the 1st through the 12th grades and the day went well according to principals and other staff members who welcomed both new and returning students to class.

Monarch Elementary School Principal Anita Maness said the school year got off to a great start at her school.

“It has been fantastic,” Maness said. “Our students act like they’ve been here throughout the year. We have welcomed many new students into our Monarch family. We’re looking forward to a great year here at Monarch Elementary.”

Foster Park Elementary School Secretary Shirley Mitchell said the day went smoothly with the children happy to be in school and the staff happy to see them.

“It went by smooth,” Mitchell said. “We were happy to see the new students and the old students returning with their smiling faces. We’re sure they’re going to soar as eagles.”

Buffalo Elementary School Principal Glenn Wile that all the students were in their classrooms and ready to begin their studies before 8 a.m.

“We have had an amazing first day,” Wile said. “The student drop-off went very, very smooth. We had all students in place by 7:55. We quickly settled into our routine and instruction has begun.”

Lockhart Elementary/Middle School Principal Eric Childers said enthusiasm was the order of the day at his school.

“We had a great day, students and staff both seem enthusiastic, we’re off to a great start,” Childers said. “We’re having a good day.”

Sims Middle School Principal Mickey Connolly said the beginning of school at Sims was very successful and has everyone looking forward to the year ahead.

“We have had a wonderful start this year,” Connolly said. “The students seem to be excited about returning to school and we’re just looking forward to a great school year.”

Wednesday will be the first day for 5K students in the county’s public schools. 4K students who attend school in the morning will have their first day Thursday, Aug. 27 and 4K students who attend class in the afternoon will have their first day on Friday, Aug. 28. Monday, Aug. 31, will be the first day both morning and afternoon 4K students begin attending school the same day for the new school year.
