UNION COUNTY — It’s been an “excellent” year for the bands of the Union County School District.

In a statement released Thursday, Director of Bands David Candler announced that the bands of Union County — Union County High School, Sims Middle School 7th Grade, Sims Middle School 8th Grade, Jonesville Elementary/Middle School, and Lockhart Elementary/Middle School — have all had “a spectacular semester so far.”

This, Candler said, was most recently demonstrated during this year’s South Carolina Band Directors Association’s South Carolina Concert Performance Assessment. Candler said the annual Assessment is “the band version of state testing. This performance trumps all performances for the year since it determines how our bands are doing compared to the rest of the state. Each band is required to prepare three pieces and perform them on stage for three music judges. Next, the band is moved into a different room and given a piece of music they have never seen. They are allowed six minutes to study the piece and then asked to play in front of two more judges.”

Sounds challenging, doesn’t it? It was, however, a challenge that the bands from Union County successfully took on.

“This year the all of the bands, including UCHS, Sims 7th, Sims 8th, Lockhart, and Jonesville received the 2nd highest ratings of Excellent!” Candler said. “UCHS, Sims 8th, and Sims 7th received perfect scores in sight-reading! This is also the first time that Jonesville and Lockhart bands have participated in this event in many years. The band is on track to continue to grow and maintain award-winning programs.”
