CARLISLE — A large crowd looking to have fun while helping their children get prepared for school helped make Saturday’s Community Fun Day/Back To School Bash the most successful in the 11-year history of the annual event.

For the past 11 years, the Town of Carlisle has sponsored the annual Community Fun Day/Back To School Bash as an end of summer/beginning of school celebration for the residents of the Carlisle community.

Community Fun Day

As in past years, the Community Fun Day portion of the event featured a variety of entertainment and activities including rides, music, games, a talent and fashion show, horseback rides, and food. Prizes were awarded, both in the talent and fashion show, and in random drawings throughout the day.

Mayor Mary Ferguson-Glenn said that Saturday’s event was very successful, drawing a larger than expected crowd.

“It was great, it was the best one ever,” Ferguson-Glenn said. “We had a record number of people attending. We had around 300 attending, it was more than I expected. It was our largest turnout.”

Ferguson-Glenn said that while everyone enjoyed all the activities available during the event, the talent and fashion show proved especially popular.

“The talent show was very successful with the children performing,” Ferguson-Glenn said. “The fashion show was also a great success.”

In addition to enjoying these activities, Ferguson-Glenn said those in attendance also took advantage of the opportunity to obtain information from the Save the Children program and the Union County Alcohol and Drug Abuse Commission. Both groups had tables at the event providing those in attendance with information about the services they offer.

Back To School Bash

The Back To School Bash portion of the event is designed to help the community’s families with school age children be ready for school through the distribution of book bags full of school supplies.

Each book bag is filled with a range of school supplies including notebook paper, composition books, binders, crayons, pencils and pens.

Ferguson-Glenn said that this portion of the event was also very successful, adding that the town not only distributed the book bags filled with school supplies, but also other items as well.

“We gave away 160 book bags filled with school supplies,” Ferguson-Glenn said. “We also gave away sneakers and hats.”

Even with the large number of book bags given away Saturday, Ferguson-Glenn said the town still has school supplies on hand for distribution.

“We still have some school supplies, so any parent with a child needing a book bag and school supplies should give us a call,” Ferguson-Glenn said.

For more information about the school supplies the Town of Carlisle still has available for distribution, call the Carlisle Town Hall at 864-427-1505.

Ferguson-Glenn thanked all those who either as volunteer and/or contributors of school supplies, helped make the event a a success.

“I want to thank everyone who donated their time and who donated school supplies,” Ferguson-Glenn said. “Without them this would not have been possible.”
