Monday was the first day of school for the teachers and other staff members of the county's public schools. They will be devoting most of their time this week to staff development, but on Wednesday the elementary and middle schools will be registering students for the new school year. The first day of school for students in the first through 12th grades will be Monday, Aug. 17. For 5K students the first day will be Wednesday, Aug. 19. 4K student who attend morning classes will have their first Thursday, Aug. 27 and those who attend afternoon classes will have theirs Friday, Aug. 28 with both attending beginning Monday, Aug. 31.

UNION COUNTY — In less than a week school begins for the students enrolled in the schools of the Union County School District but for teachers the new school year began Monday.

Teachers were back at school at all of the county’s public schools Monday for a week of staff development.

This week will also see registration for students at all but one of the county’s public schools on Wednesday. Registration for students will be held from 8-11:30 a.m. and 1:30-4:30 p.m. at Buffalo Elementary School, Foster Park Elementary School, Monarch Elementary School, Jonesville Elementary/Middle School, and Lockhart Elementary Middle School.

At Sims Middle School registration will be from 8-11:30 a.m. and 1:30-4 p.m. and will be done alphabetically. Students whose last names begin with the letters A-M will be registered in the morning. Those students whose last names begin with the letters N-Z will be registered in the afternoon.

(Registration for Union County High School was held Aug. 5 and Aug. 6.)

Students will not begin returning to school until Monday, Aug. 17 when classes begin for grades 1-12.

The first day of school for 5K students will be Wednesday, Aug. 19.

4K students who attend the morning classes at the elementary schools will have their first day of the 2015-2016 school year on Thursday, Aug. 27. Students in the 4K afternoon classes will not attend that day.

Friday, Aug. 28 will be the first day of school for 4K students attending afternoon classes at the elementary schools. 4K students in the morning classes will not attend that day.

Monday, Aug. 31 will be the first day both the morning and afternoon 4K classes attend school on the same day.
