Twenty percent of the proceeds or $3,000 went to the Volunteers who will use them to fund scholarships for Union County High School students interested in pursuing a career in health care. The group also uses the funds to purchase equipment for the Union Medical Center and Ellen Sagar Nursing Center.

UNION — The Union Medical Center Volunteers will use their 20 percent share of the $15,000 raised by their latest Book & Gift Sale fundraiser to help fund their scholarship program.

Each year, the Volunteers hold a series of fundraisers including bake sales, book and gift sales, and jewelry and accessories sales. Their most recent fundraiser was a Book & Gift Sale held April 18 and 19 in the main lobby of the Union Medical Center. The event was held in collaboration with Books Are Fun and offered a wide variety of items for sale.

“We had books, of course,” Volunteer Coordinator Greta Bailey said Tuesday afternoon. “We also had electronics including tables and speakers. We had hammocks, flashlights, stuffed animals, solar lights, and gardening items. We had just a wide variety of items.”

Bailey said that the sale raised $15,000 of which the Volunteers received $3,000 or 20 percent.

As with their other fundraisers, the Volunteers will use their share of the proceeds from April’s Book & Gift Sale to help fund scholarships for UCHS students

The volunteers use their share of the funds raised through the jewelry and accessories, book, and bake sales to help fund scholarships for Union County High School students interested in pursuing a career in health care. Each scholarship is for $750 and is used to help cover the cost of tuition. The Volunteers fund three scholarships each semester.

In addition to the scholarships, the volunteers also use the funds to purchase equipment for the Union Medical Center and Ellen Sagar Nursing Center. Among their most recent purchases were lights for the medical center’s Christmas tree and new wheelchairs for the ER Department.

Bailey said that the Volunteers will have their next fundraiser on Monday 16 from 7 a.m.-7 p.m. and Tuesday, May 17 from 7 a.m.-5 p.m. She this will one of its $5 Jewelry and Accessories sales the Volunteers which she said are the group’s most popular fundraisers.
