JONESVILLE — In gambling, the odds favor the house.
But every so often someone beats those odds to win a fortune.
Cassandra Ramsey of Gaffney did just that on Oct. 30 when she bought a “Bags of Cash” scratch-off lottery ticket at Gene’s One Stop in Jonesville.
The 19-year-old Jonesville native usually buys two different lottery tickets a day and, like most, rarely wins anything. This day was different, however, as Ramsey scratched off the ticket and discovered she’d won $1,000.
Or so she thought.
“I didn’t believe it at first,” Ramsey said. “At first I thought it was a a thousand dollars.”
Her mother, Tracy Jones, took a closer look at the ticket and corrected her daughter — it was $100,000.
“I felt like fainting,” Ramsey said.
Of course, Ramsey had to share her good fortune with the State of South Carolina and the government of the United States who took federal and state taxes off the top leaving her with just $68,000.
In the week since her stroke of luck, Ramsey and her boyfriend, Justin Holcomb, have bought a trailer, allowing them and their daughter, Tayla, to move out of his parents’ home. She said on Monday they will go pay off their car. They have also set up a college fund for Tayla and plan to give her a really nice Christmas.
As for the future, Ramsey said she no longer plans to buy scratch-off lottery tickets. She’s going for bigger and better jackpots.
“I’m working on the PowerBall,” she said. “I’d love to hit the PowerBall.”
