JONESVILLE — Jonesville Middle School would like to congratulate its 2014 Battle of the Brains team for being a first time Elite Eight champion in its 14-year competition history.
The Battle of the Brains, which was founded by Bill Drake, is a question-and-answer competition that involves 36 middle and junior high schools in upstate South Carolina, including all three middle schools in Union County.
The 2014 Battle of the Brain members were Uriel Trejo, Anthony Esposito, Adam Sommerman, Kayla Means, De’Shaun Holmes, and Jada Jones. The team competed in three separate matches, between February and March, at the Chapman Cultural Center in Spartanburg, South Carolina. They defeated Lockhart Middle School (78-46) and Ewing Middle School (59-36) before they too were defeated by Granard Middle School (69-42). Jonesville Middle School finished in fifth place overall, earning its first Elite Eight recognition for the school.
The top eight schools were recognized at a banquet on April 22, 2014, at the Spartanburg Memorial Auditorium Arena. During the banquet, a dinner catered by Rose Crest of Spartanburg was served. After dinner, a one-round mock “Battle of the Brains” competition featuring one student from each school took place.
To conclude the banquet, the financial sponsors of the Battle of the Brains competition were introduced and each school was presented with a trophy and money. The team sponsors for Jonesville Middle School’s Battle of the Brains team are Mrs. Stephanie Durham Hastings and Mrs. Priscilla Martin.
