UNION — Lions will be walking along Main Street beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday, March 15 to raise money to help the needy of Union County.

The Lions are the men and women of the Union Lions Club and Lion George Goings said Friday that plans are for at least 20 of its 30 members to take part in the “Walk for Sight.” Lion George said the purpose of the walk is to, first, “raise public awareness about the Union Lions Club and the important work that we do to provide needed service to those in our community.” He said the club will also be “raising money to help fund free eye exams, glasses, hearing aids, and services we provide to those in need in Union County.”

Lion George pointed out that the fiscal year for the Lions runs from July 1 to June 30. He said as of the end of February, the club has provided free services worth more than $50,000 to the people of Union County over the preceding 20 months.

“So far from July to end of February we have helped an individual with an eye surgery,” Lion George said. “We provided sight and hearing screenings for 133 students at Sims (Middle School). That’s over $14,600 worth of services if you’d gone to a doctor.

“In FY 2013 we helped with one eye surgery and helped four with hearing aids,” he said. “We provided 358 screenings for students at Sims Middle School and Buffalo Elementary School. That was $37,000 worth of services.”

Lion George pointed out that during the same time period the S.C. Lions provided nearly $2.4 million worth of free services to the people of South Carolina.

“The total for the state for FY 2013 was $1,428,600,” Lion George said. “For FY 2014 the S.C. Lions have provided $929,015.47 in services. We’re on track to surpass last year.”

Lion George asked the people of Union County to help the Union Lions Club help those in need of its services by sponsoring a club member for the walk on March 15.

“Please support us by pledging funds for this walk by sponsoring a member of the Union Lions Club during this walk,” Lion George said. “Any donation will be gladly accepted. To sponsor a Union Lions Club member, just get in touch with any member of the club.”
