LaGrange police arrested a 17 year old on several charges including homicide by vehicle and DUI on Tuesday after an investigation into a crash in April that claimed the life of a 16 year old.

The suspect, who was not named by police because he was a juvenile at 16 years old when the incident occurred, was charged as a juvenile with the following: homicide by vehicle, DUI, leaving the scene of an accident, reckless driving, possession of alcohol under 21, open container, violation of class D license restriction, seatbelt violation and failure to maintain lane. The suspect turned himself in Tuesday after his family was notified of the pending arrest, according to LaGrange police, and was released by juvenile court authorities pending a court hearing scheduled for later that day.

The juvenile is charged in the April 13, 2013, death of Christopher Mabe, who was killed after the 2005 Nissan Maxima that police believe the suspect was driving at a high rate of speed left the roadway in the 2200 block of Mooty Bridge Road and crashed into several trees. Mabe was a junior varsity football and baseball player at LaGrange High School.

Police said the arrest came after “a lengthy criminal investigation into the vehicle crash.” Detective Hilton Swanson said that part of the length of the investigation stemmed from awaiting DNA results from the GBI Crime Lab, though he declined to elaborate on what evidence was being tested or further details due to the ongoing investigation.
