UNION — The Union County High School Drama Department will present a production of “The Magical Lamp of Aladdin” by Tim Kelly at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 13, in the UCHS Cafetorium.
The play — directed by Ralph Lawson — tells the story of the evil magician Jammal trying to trick Aladdin in a scheme to acquire a magical lamp containing a wish-granting genie. Aladdin tricks Jammal and claims the magical lamp for himself, using its power to win over the princess and impress the sultan. Trouble arises for Aladdin when Jammal regains possession of the lamp and kidnaps Princess Jasmine, and to set things straight, Aladdin must face Chop-Chop, the merciless executioner. Finally, Aladdin and Jasmine are reunited, and Jammal is transformed into a new person. This version of the story also features three genies, the whining Ali “Bubba,” a fire-breathing dragon and the haughty sultan’s wife.
In addition to the public performance on Friday, the group will perform a total of three daytime shows for local school groups. The first of those was Tuesday; the second is at 9 a.m. today; and the third will be at 9 a.m. on Thursday.
Lawson said he wanted to thank all merchants and individuals who placed ads in the show program. He said members of the G/T Drama class will go to Walt Disney World during spring break to participate in acting workshops with Disney artists, and 100 percent of funds raised from the ads will go toward those students’ trips.
