UNION — A local Relay for Life team raised over $1,000 Saturday by hosting a Halloween costume party.

The Union County Relay for Life team known as Team Leroy hosted a Halloween costume party benefit — featuring a performance from the band Quest — Saturday evening at Shady’s. Including admission and raffle ticket sales for items donated by local businesses, Team Leroy raised $1,130 at the event, which will go toward the team’s 2014 Union County Relay for Life efforts.

“We had a huge turnout for the costume contest,” said team member Reba Vinson.

Vinson also said the team is thankful for the items donated by local businesses for the raffles.

The members of Team Leroy walked in the 2013 Union County Relay for Life in memory of Leroy “Little Man” Belue, who passed away from cancer in January. The team raised the most funds of all the Union County relay teams with a grand total of $16,350.47. The team also won “Best Campsite,” “Top New Team,” and a “Spirit of the Relay” awards the night of the relay.

Team Leroy member Gwen Ivey said she is asking for special prayer for Leroy’s widow, Beth Belue, as she is in rehab in Spartanburg after suffering from a stroke last Thursday.

The team’s next fundraiser will be Tuesday, Nov. 5, when La Fogata will donate a percentage of all sales — from 5-10 p.m. that night — to the team.
