UNION COUNTY — The Union County High School Girls Golf Team will compete for the championship in the state finals next week and the public is being urged to support them during a fundraiser this evening.

In a statement released this week, Coach Kim Balkum announced that her team had won a slot in the state finals during competition on Monday.

“UCHS Girls Golf advanced to the SCHSL State Finals Monday (10-21) at Village Greens Golf Course,” Balkum said. “Kanani Lodge led the team with a par 72. Haley Palmer shot 101, Taylor Peahuff 106, Tatiana Ferguson 112, and Annie Willard 135 for a team total of 391.

“UCHS placed seventh out of 18 teams at Upper State,” she said. “The team will travel to Black Bear Golf Course Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 28 and 29, in Longs, South Carolina to compete for the AAA State Title.”

In addition to the team going to the state championship, Balkum said one member has been chosen to take part in another prestigious event.

“Kanani Lodge has been selected to participate in the All Girls North/South All Star Cup at TimberLake Country Club in Chapin, November 8 and 9,” Balkum said. “Kanani is a senior at UCHS and is currently ranked 49th in the state. The senior averages a 79 and has an 8.2 handicap. Kanani is the granddaughter of Elenaor Garrido and resides in Jonesville.”

The people of Union County will have an opportunity to support the team during a fundraiser this evening at a local restaurant.

Balkum said the team will be holding a fundraiser today at El Poblano beginning at 5 p.m. She said a portion of the proceeds will help fund the team’s trip to the state finals next week.

“Please come out before the game and support Girls Golf this Thursday at El Poblano,” Balkum said.
