UNION — The first of two “Think Pink” football games will take place at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Sims Middle School.

The Sims Tigers 7th grade football team will host Gaffney Middle School this Wednesday, Oct. 23, in a Think Pink game, from which all proceeds will go toward breast cancer research. This is the first time Sims has held the Think Pink games, and players will wear pink ribbons on their helmets and pink socks. T-shirts, pink pom poms and pink megaphones will also be for sale at the game to raise additional funds for the cause. Admission will be $4 for adults and $2 for students.

The 7th grade team is coming off of a heartbreaking 20-14 loss last week to DR Hill.

“The Tigers gave up 14 points at the beginning of the game but fought their way back to make it a game,” said Coach Mitchell Moss.

Moss said the Tigers were down 20-8 at the half after Quez Smith scored on a 20-yard touchdown run and a two-point conversion run. Adjustments were made at halftime, and Sims dominated the second half, preventing DR Hill from putting any more points on the board.

Smith provided another touchdown run, but the Tigers’ final drive was unsuccessful.

“The coaches are proud of how the Tigers fought back in the second half,” Moss said. “If we play the rest of the year how we did the last two quarters of the game last night, then we will win our last two games.”

Last Thursday, the 8th grade team was defeated by DR Hill 42-0. DR Hill quickly took the lead after a turnover by Sims at the beginning of the game.

“First off, we have to give credit to DR Hill — they are a great team,” Moss said. “Are they 42 points better than us? No, we didn’t handle adversity very well, and it showed. But we never gave up.”

Moss said the team is in a situation in which it has never been before, and the true character of the team will begin to show through its reaction to the situation.

“If its the team that I know, they will come back the next two weeks and give their best effort,” Moss said.

The 8th grade team will play at Gaffney Middle on Thursday. Next Thursday, Oct. 31, the 8th grade team will host its own Think Pink game.
