UNION COUNTY — An event that raises funds to purchase equipment for the Union Hospital District is once again being sponsored by the City of Union and Union County.
The Union County Health Care Foundation is a network of caring citizens whose goal is to identify and secure additional funding to supplement the efforts of Wallace Thomson Hospital, Ellen Sagar Nursing Home, the Emergency Medical Service (EMS), and the medical community of Union County in providing high quality, cost effective health care. The foundation does this by raising funds through charitable donations and fund raising events with the proceeds applied to the health care needs of the citizens of Union County.
One of those fundraisers is the annual captain’s choice Fall Charity Golf Classic which the foundation has sponsored for the past 15 years. This year’s Fall Charity Golf Classic will be held Friday, Oct. 4 at the Woodfin Ridge Golf Club in Inman.
The event raises funds through the fees paid by individuals and teams registering to play and corporate sponsors. Two of those corporate sponsors are the City of Union and Union County. Union City Council allocated $500 making the city a Silver Sponsor. Union County Council allocated $750 making the county a Gold Sponsor.
Union Mayor Harold Thompson said that council decided to continue sponsoring the event because “it has been a good partnership to raise funds for much needed equipment for the hospital that will benefit our citizens.”
Supervisor Tommy Sinclair said the funds county council allocated were some “sponsorship money” which the county uses to support local charitable and community causes and organizations. He said county council decided to sponsor the event because the money it raises “goes to help the hospital.”
Foundation Executive Director Catherine Childers thanked both the city and county for their continuing support of the event.
“I’m very thankful that the city is participating by being a Silver Sponsor and the county by being a Gold Sponsor,” Childers said. “Knowing that the hospital is important to the community I am very excited to know that we have their support.”
In addition to Gold and Silver sponsors, those interested in sponsoring the event can become Bronze Sponsors ($250) or Member Sponsors ($150).
Childers said that last year’s Fall Charity Golf Classic attracted 18 teams and raised $5,000. She said the tournament can accommodate up to 24 teams. All funds raised at this year’s event will go toward helping purchase a new ambulance for the Union County EMS. The foundation is hoping to raise a total of $20,000 this year through all of its fundraising events.
Each team is to be composed of four players and Childers said that so far 13 teams or 52 players have signed up.
Childers said there will be giveaways and breakfast and lunch will be provided to the players. She said this year’s event will also include the putting competition with cash prizes awarded on the spot.
The fee to register to compete in the tournament is $75 per person or $260 per team. The deadline for registration is Friday.
Anyone interest in registering to compete should call Catherine Childers at 864-301-2466. For questions about the golf course call Woodfin Ridge Golf Club at 864-578-0023.
