UNION — The Union County Yellow Jackets will take on the Greer Yellow Jackets at Greer tonight for what is being billed as “Jacket Bowl 19.”
Since the “Jacket Bowl” began in 1999, the two teams have met 18 times, with Greer winning only eight of those games. Last year, the teams split with Greer winning the regular season game and Union County winning the second-round playoff game. Union County High School’s predecessor — Union High — first squared off with Greer in 1922, making that rivalry one of the oldest.
The 0-2 Union County Yellow Jackets will look for redemption tonight as they battle the Greer team, which lost the first game of the season 35-27 to Seneca and then defeated Riverside last week with a final score of 42-3.
Union County’s Coach Steve Taneyhill said a tough schedule early in the season made his team better in the end last year, and he’s looking for that to happen again. Taneyhill also said he feels his defense has played well over the past two weeks, keeping each of the opposing teams under 300 yards.
Key players on the Greer team for Union County to watch will include QB Mark Cusano, who passed for 471 yards and five touchdowns over the past two games. Another is RB Quez Nesbitt, a runner, receiver and returner, who rushed for 212 yards against Riverside.
