UNION — USC Union will offer four continuing education classes which will be open to all members of the community.
Starting in September, USC Union will offer community classes in self defense for women, quilting, cardio sculpting, and basic yoga. Kaitlyn Wade, of USC Union’s Continuing Education department, said the department tries to keep costs down as much as possible to allow more people to afford the classes.
Self Defense Training
Women of all ages — young students, high school students, college students, adults, and seniors — are invited to attend Self Defense Training with instructor Jamie Vaughn of the Union Karate Center. Vaughn said the class will teach students about fighting someone larger than themselves by exploiting vital targets.
This class will be held from 6-7:30 p.m. Sept. 23-24 at the USC Union Truluck Gymnasium. The cost is $30.
No sewing or quilting experience is required for this beginners’ quilting class taught by instructor Angela Wyatt. Students will learn to quilt a tree skirt from fabric of their choice, and they are required to bring their own sewing supplies.
The class will be held from 6-7:30 p.m. each Thursday, beginning Sept. 12 and running through Oct. 17, at the USC Union Founders House. The cost is $75.
Students will have an opportunity to get in shape — toning arms, legs, abs and core, etc. — with this Cardio Sculpting class taught by instructor Wanda Fore. Students will be required to bring a mat and hand weights.
The class will be held from 7-8 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, starting Tuesday, Sept. 3, at USC Union’s Truluck Gymnasium. The cost is $40 per month, and everyone is invited to try one class for free.
Basic Yoga for Beginners
This class — advertised as a solution for those who are feeling stressed — will cover basic yoga techniques with instructor Wanda Fore. Students will be required to bring their own mat.
The class will be held from 4:30-5:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, starting Tuesday, Sept. 3, at USC Union’s Truluck Gymnasium. The cost is $40 per month, and everyone is invited to try one class for free.
